Northern Lights Hunting

Northern Lights Hunting

Autumn and winter aurora-chasing packages, from short trips to week-long multi-activity adventures.

Our northern-lights packages start in autumn, one of the best times of year for seeing the lights. We offer 2-day and week-long packages focused on hunting the aurora, with most designed over a week — the longer you spend with us, the more likely you are to experience the magic. No-one can ever guarantee the aurora, but we can always guarantee a great experience looking for it!

Aurora hunting in the autumn: why?

Autumn in northern Finland is lovely for hiking through fells in every shade of 'ruska' without worrying about freezing. Best of all, it is one of the most pleasant times to view the northern lights, as each dark night grows longer and the stars come out for beautiful photo opportunities. Temperatures can fluctuate 20 degrees in a day, so you can approach the landscape with a new lens each day.

Autumn aurora package options

Some of our aurora packages are multi-activity packages in which you experience the best of the Arctic in the late mornings and afternoons and search for the aurora at night. Others focus on afternoon activities with the dogs (hiking or quad-training) and evening aurora searches. The final packages are built around more physical wilderness journeys by foot, bike or river. There is a 2-day, 4-day and 7-day option with most packages.

Aurora in winter

By the time winter comes, our focus is primarily on short and multi-day husky tours, although we also offer northern lights snowmobile tours. The multi-day tours in particular journey far out into the wilderness — in our 2016–17 season, nearly all of our 5-day groups experienced at least one day of amazing northern lights far from civilisation.
