Hire, Shop & Transfers

Hire, Shop & Transfers

Car and kit transfers, gear hire for every season, dog food and supplies, and our souvenir shop — everything to support your Enontekiö adventure.

Alongside our guided activities, Hetta Huskies runs a full hire, shop and transfer operation: car transfers between Hetta and Pallas for €85, transfers to trailheads and river put-ins, and a large range of summer and winter kit for hire — fatbikes, skis and snowshoes, canoes, kayaks, mountain safety gear and Arctic clothing. We also sell our own high-quality dog food and mushing equipment, and stock branded souvenirs in our shop.

  • Hetta–Pallas car transfer: €85 per transfer
  • Optional timed car delivery to Pallas: +€15
  • Off-road roadhead car exchange: +€8
  • Trailhead drop to the national park roadhead: €10pp (min. €30)
  • Full summer & winter kit hire, dog supplies and souvenir shop

Car Transfers: Hetta–Pallas

Car transfers between Hetta and Pallas run in the key hiking and skiing seasons for €85 per transfer. If you have rented pulks, skis or bikes from us and want your car timed to a specific Pallas arrival — saving a return trip with the kit — we can usually do this (+/- one hour) for an extra €15.

Crossing Lake Ounasjärvi to reach the trails

In mid-winter, when the lake is frozen, you can simply cross the lake by ski.

In summer, there are four main companies organising boat transfers across the lake. It is also possible to start from the forestry road that leads to the Pyhäkero cabin, thereby reducing your hiking distance by about 7km.

Canoe, Kayak & SUP Hire

Paddling a kayak on a calm Arctic lake

Canoe, kayak and other water kit for hire. Day and week prices are listed; reductions apply over two weeks. For rent we have 3 x 2-seater canoes, 3 x 3-seater canoes, 11 single touring kayaks, 1 double touring kayak, 2 children's kayaks and 3 inflatable SUP boards. Further kayaks and canoes (including racing K1s, a K2, a wavehopper and sea kayaks) may be available on request.

  • Single kayak €30/day, €185/week; canoe €40/day, €250/week
  • Inflatable SUP €15/day; packraft €25/day
  • Suonttajoki facilitated paddle: €20pp (canoe) / €45pp (kayak)
  • Buoyancy aids, paddles and spraydecks included with hire
  • Children's boats available at the same rental rates

Hire Costs @ Base

Per day / per week: Single Kayak €30 / €185; Double Kayak €40 / €250; 2–3pax Canoe €40 / €250; Canoe Trolley €5 / €25; Barrels, Dry Bags & Pelicases €5 / €25 per item; Inflatable SUP Board €15 / €175; Packraft €25 / €125. For kayak hire from the Rysä in downtown Hetta there is an additional €5 service charge to cover the 16km of driving for check-out and check-in. When you hire our watercraft we also issue buoyancy aids, paddles and a spraydeck for kayaks if required.

Recommended Local Paddle: Suonttajoki–Ounasjärvi

A wonderful close-to-home paddle on the Suonttajoki River — a c.3-hour facilitated journey we recommend to all our visiting friends and family. A guide walks you from the homestead to the canoes (about 7 minutes away), helps you to the water and gives basic paddling tips. You meander down the Suonttajoki and across Lake Ounasjärvi to a community fireplace on the far shore, perfect for grilling sausages, before paddling back. Cost is €20/person for canoes (2–3 people per canoe) and €45/person for kayaks, including buoyancy aid and paddle.

Transfers & Guiding

If you are competent to paddle alone, you can simply rent the boats and we can organise transfers to and from river put-ins and take-outs. If you would like extra confidence, we are happy to guide you on these journeys — and on some rivers this gives you access to wilderness cabins for overnight stops that we do not otherwise rent out. For transfer-only options see the facilitated journey prices; for guided trips see our canoe and kayak adventures pages.

Our Dog-Supplies Shop

Hetta Huskies feeding their working sled dogs

Our dogs work hard in winter, live mostly outside and, as working animals, need a high-energy diet balanced in vitamins, minerals and fat through the year. With over 100 dogs to feed we order meat and kibble by the tonne, which lowers the cost per bag — and we are happy to supply the same high-quality, low-cost food to locals who cannot order in bulk.

  • 10kg block of raw Musch meat: €15
  • 20kg bag of Puhti Zip dry food: €39 (€1.95/kg)
  • Set of 4 dog booties: €10
  • New & second-hand harnesses, necklines and skijoring kit for sale

Dog Meat

We supplement our dry food with Musch raw meat. Our Musch-sourced 10kg blocks of raw meat cost €15 each.

Harnesses, Booties & Mushing Kit

We have a number of new and second-hand dog harnesses available for sale in a variety of sizes. A set of 4 dog booties can be purchased for €10. Necklines and other mushing and skijoring equipment can also be purchased from us — please enquire for more details.

Dry Food

We use Puhti's Zip food from Hankkija and sell 20kg bags at €39.00 (incl. 14% VAT) — €1.95/kg. Zip is an energy-rich food suited to strenuous exercise: rich in protein and vitamin E, with 4.0% dried salmon for essential fatty acids plus chondroitin and glucosamine for the joints, and no wheat, artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Working-dog and puppy food are available on request.

The Bikes

E-Fat Bikes: 3 x S/M, 5 large and 1 XL available — 'S-Electros' from Silverback and S/M and M/L 'Avalanche' bikes from Rock Machine. Our E-fats are stored downtown in a heated store in winter, so there is a supplemental €20 charge to the winter hire prices to cover issuing and returning them.

Adult Fat Bikes: 3 small, 3 medium and 4 large — 'Charge' Cooker Maxi 2s, Nakamura Mammut, 'Salsa' Mukluk and 'Felt' DD30s.

Children's Fat Bikes: 2 (suitable c.8–12 yrs), both Scoop Half bikes from Silverback, plus one small children's mountain bike for a 6–9 year old.

Fat Max Scooters: kick-bikes with fat tyres, most commonly used for fat-max-joring with the dogs but also rentable for kicking around locally.

Where to Go

We are happy to advise on suitable trails. Some favourites are hard to explain, so for a quick tester ride — or a guide along in case of mechanical issues — see our guided route options. We much prefer people to ride to and from our site, just 4km from the centre of town, rather than transferring the bikes, as most damage we have seen comes from inadequate transfer care. In winter you can bike on maintained trails right from our yard. We use apps such as rewindr, jahtikartta and karttaselain, and local bike trail maps can be found on 'ULKO'.

Insurance, Liability & Replacement Values (from the Price List)

You can purchase peace-of-mind liability-reduction insurance at €10/day (bike), which means you are not responsible for the first €100 in repair costs — this covers the majority of issues. A full-package damage waiver against any item rented is €25/day. Emergency Roadhead Extraction Insurance is €10/day, and a bundled Damage Waiver + Extraction package is €25/day (first €250 liability + roadside recovery). For 2-day+ rentals we may require a damage deposit (credit-card charge plus a photo ID).

Example extraction transfer costs: Pallas (180km round trip) €120; Näkkälä (80km) €55; Kalmakaltio (124km) €92; Ketomella/Hietajärvi (98km) €75.

Example replacement values: Rock Machine Avalanche E-fat €3899; Silverback S-Electro E-fat €2250; 500Wh battery €680; charger €125; display €150; Silverback Scoop Half fatbike €750; Charge/Felt/Nakamura fatbikes €1800; inner tube €15; broken chain €30; adjustable helmet €100.

Rental Terms & Conditions

Rental prices are charged in advance; insurance fees can be paid at pick-up. You need to present ID and provide contact details. Use of equipment is at the renter's own risk, and bikes must be returned in the same good condition (ordinary wear and tear excepted). Each bike is professionally checked and fit before your arrival and wiped with alcohol solution before and after use; please check it and ride a test circuit in the yard on receipt. We cover failures beyond the renter's control (e.g. damaged frames, worn bottom brackets) but not tune-ups, punctures, broken spokes/chains/derailleurs or damage from use or misuse. Instruction in bicycle use and maintenance is not provided — participants must be competent with a multi-speed bicycle.

Our branded merchandise includes mugs, postcards and two annual calendars — a husky calendar and a local landscape calendar.

  • Husky mugs in a wide range of designs
  • Postcards featuring our dogs and landscapes
  • Annual Husky Calendar and Landscape Calendar

Mugs

We have a wide selection of mugs, most based around the collection of images of our dogs drawn by Iona Inglesby in the summer of 2012. Designs include our basic mug logo (in orange, red, blue or black), the classic logo and husky-team image showing lead guide Emily Haris driving the sleigh, and individual dogs such as Arrow, Hertz, Osman, Mars, Mallibu, Bino and the popular multi-day safari dogs Pluto and Mars.

Postcards & Calendars

We also stock our own postcards and two calendars updated each year: a Husky Calendar and a Landscape Calendar.

Lake-to-Lake Paddle (via Lake Muotkajärvi)

The rest is a beautiful flat-water journey through gorgeous scenery — an after-work favourite of our guides. The facilitated journey price, including car transfer and canoe or kayak hire, is €50 / person.

Palojoki Wilderness River

Our favourite close-by river journey — 31km from a remote put-in near Leppäjärvi to a take-out up-river of Palojoensuu (or c.35km to Palojoensuu itself). As a guided trip we overnight in a boutique trapper's cabin about halfway; as a facilitated journey you take a tent. A longer section can be paddled from Galdotieva over 2+ days. Facilitated 1-day journey: €75 per person (min. 2). Facilitated 2-day journey: €100 per person (min. 2). Car drop-off/pick-up at either end: +€25 per direction.

Käkkälöjoki River

The normal 38km section runs through the remote Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area from Kalmakaltio to Siltakoski. It can be done in one day but is generally recommended as an overnight trip. Facilitated 1-day journey: €95 per person (min. 2). Facilitated 2-day journey: €135 per person (min. 2). Car pick-up from Kalmakaltio dropped to the take-out: €45.
