Summer in Arctic Enontekiö

Summer in Arctic Enontekiö

Long midnight-sun days, farm visits and summer adventure - plus the high fells, hiking trails and reindeer culture of Enontekiö.

You are very welcome to visit our farm outside the mushing and training / transition seasons - there is always lots going on. It is genuinely important for the dogs' continuity of care that friendly strangers visit them through the year, so they don't become nervous around new people.

  • c. 3-4 weeks of midnight sun around mid-summer; long days June to September
  • Summer adventure day with a mix of dog and non-dog activities
  • Farm visits welcomed - keeps the dogs sociable with strangers
  • Summer temperatures 5-25C, norm c. 10-15C; relatively little rain
  • Arctic Trail hiking route draws c. 5,000-10,000 hikers a year

Activities around the farm

Our summer options section covers the activities around the farm at this time - for instance, a summer adventure day packed with activities, some dog-related and some not. There are also plenty of things to do in Enontekiö that don't involve dogs at all, many referenced on our 'area attractions' page.

The midnight sun

The beginning and end of summer in Lapland are glorious. Days are super long from June until September, and in mid-summer we have c. 3-4 weeks of midnight sun, so there is no need to end your exploring just because the evening is drawing in - for hikers out on the municipality's many wilderness trails, there is never an excuse to stop!

Around mid-summer the insects so important to the Arctic ecosystem come out to pollinate the flowers, so in one sense this isn't the ideal time to visit. But it makes for interesting culture: the flies drive the reindeer up onto the high fells, and you may be lucky enough to witness one of the remote reindeer gatherings, as this is when the Sami ear-mark their calves.

Weather and the wider region

Summer temperatures range between 5C and 25C, with c. 10-15C the norm. Perhaps surprisingly there is not much rain, as we are far inland and the climate is relatively stable; when it does rain it tends to pour heavily in short, intense bursts.

Hetta attracts many independent motorists and coach tours, who stop to visit the nature centre / reindeer nature trails and overnight in a village hotel before continuing towards Alta or the North Cape in Norway. Kilpisjärvi, in the western 'arm' of Enontekiö, draws many summer hikers, as its high fell areas (Arctic Trail and Halti) are fairly unique - the Arctic Trail alone attracts approx. 5,000-10,000 hikers a year. Many cruise to the Three Countries Border Marker, climb the sacred Saana fell, explore Malla Nature Reserve, visit Siilastupa Information Point or take the region's nature trails.
