Travel via Sweden

How to reach Hetta from Northern or Southern Sweden, via Kiruna airport, hire car, bus or train.

The nearest airport in Northern Sweden is Kiruna - about the same distance from us as Rovaniemi in Finland (c. 240km / a 3-hour drive). Because the bus connections from Kiruna are limited, we recommend hiring a car if you fly in here.

  • Nearest airport: Kiruna, Northern Sweden - c. 240km / a 3-hour drive from Hetta
  • Border crossing at Karesuvanto is c. 60km from Hetta
  • Narvik, Norway is c. 400km from Hetta via Kiruna
  • Car hire recommended - bus connections from Kiruna are limited
  • Daily Matkahuolto busses to Hetta from the Finnish side of Karesuando

Driving from Kiruna

The easiest route is to drive to the border crossing at Karesuvanto, c. 60km from Hetta, then follow the main road to the Hetta junction at Palojoensuu. The more intrepid might instead take smaller roads to the border crossing at Muonio, passing the commemorative statue of Serum Race hero Leonard Seppala in the small village of Eajala en route. (This meandering route isn't shown on our 'underground' Hetta map and isn't recommended, for instance, for hitching!)

Kiruna is also the way through to Narvik in Norway (c. 400km from Hetta) and the Lofoten Islands.

Local transport from Kiruna

To stick to local transport, take the bus from Kiruna to Karesuando with Lanstrafiken Norrbotten. At the border village you cross the connecting bridge between the two countries on foot.

Busses to Hetta depart daily from the Finnish side of Karesuando with Matkahuolto; you may need to change at Palojoensuu.

Arriving from Southern Sweden

If you fly into Southern Sweden, then the train North (again to Kiruna) can be booked in advance relatively cheaply. For more information on bus and train arrival and departure times see the Matkahuolto Busses and Lanstrafiken Norrbotten Busses websites.
