Hotels - Fellhotel Vuontispirtti
Vuontispirtti is a parish-owned hotel nestled amongst the fells in Ylikyrö village in the south-eastern corner of the Pallas-Ounas National Park, in an ideal location for outdoors activities all year around; ski tracks and hiking routes to the National Park start from the hotel and there are plenty of possibilities for mountain biking. Vuontispirtti offers accommodation in hotel rooms, cabins and apartments and has a camping and caravan site. There are 42 double rooms and 4 single rooms in the main building, 10 separate cabins accommodating 4 people each, and fully equipped apartments hosting up to 8 people. There is also a meeting area, café, restaurant serving tasty buffets, souvenir shop and guide services.
Luxury Cabins & Wilderness Centres
Kalmakaltio Wilderness Centre, north east of Nunnanen on the eastern edge of the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness area, is a good base for hunting, fishing and cloudberry picking (though it may be for sale).
In Kilpisjärvi, Tundrea is a privately owned, family-operated resort in business since 1989, offering high-quality chalets and apartments each with a private sauna, TV, fully equipped kitchen and free Wi-Fi. Villa Kilpisjärvi provides three high-quality holiday apartments - Halti (c. 85 m2, sleeps 1-8), Saana (50 m2, sleeps 1-5) and Malla (27 m2, sleeps 1-3). Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus (Hiking Centre), under the shadows of Saana fell 6km from the Norwegian border, offers guesthouse rooms sleeping 2-4 (20 in total) and 13 lakeside cabins for up to 4, with its famous restaurant seating 200, originally started in 1937 as the Siilastupa.
Hostels & Cheaper Cabins
Ketomella Cabins offer wilderness cabins and catering just off the main Ounasjoki river, with a central kota for groups. En route to Kilpisjärvi: Rajabaari Puranen in Karasuando is a multifunctional petrol station with café, restaurant, pharmacy, shop, sauna and rentable rooms; Vikkurikosken Leirintä is a holiday centre on the Könkämäeno fishing river, 15km north of Karesuvanto, with 2-, 4- and 6-person cabins (open 20.6.-30.8); and Ropin Pirtti by lake Naimakkajärvi offers cabins for 2-4 people and a café selling doughnuts (open April to mid September). In Kilpisjärvi, Majatalo Haltinmaa offers semi-attached cottages for up to 6 with Bosse's Bar and the Lapintyttö restaurant buffet (16EUR adults, 7EUR children under 7, free under 3), and Saivaara Mökit offers 52 m2 cabins with sauna.
Camping and Wilderness Cabins & Cottages
There are tent and caravan spots in the villages of Hetta, Nunnanen, Leppäjärvi and Palojärvi. Private tourist enterprises rent holiday cottages in these villages - Villipohjola is the main website for finding wilderness huts in Finland. Käsivarren Tunturipalvelu offers accommodation near Karesuvanto along the road to Kilpisjärvi, with three cabins (Suopursu, Lavijoen mökki inside a reindeer-herding fence, and the modest Hukkajärven mökki) plus the Syväjärvi wilderness hut. In Kilpisjärvi they also offer camping rooms by the famous Saana fell, with a former roadworkers' apartment accommodating up to 12 people with stunning views to Saana and the mountains of Sweden and Norway.
