By snowmobile you can cover a lot of terrain quickly, and at this latitude that means crossing several eco-zones in a single day. These tours capture the best of the trails within a day of Hetta. All reach the tundra, and the longest climbs onto the high tundra above the spruce and pine lines - a truly Arctic landscape, an endless desert of snow.
- Climbs onto the high treeless Arctic tundra near the Norwegian border
- Optional detour to the World Heritage Struve Geodetic Arc stone
- Choice of three trails: Nakkalan Trails, Arctic Tundra Safari, and the shorter Galdotievo sleigh return
- Includes snowmobile suit and boots on request, helmet and snowmobile/sleigh
Nakkalan Trails
Enontekio sits above the spruce line and at the northern end of the pine line. North of Hetta, the trees disappear almost completely, so you may find yourself driving through nothing but whiteness as far as the eye can see.
Distance and approx. duration: 70-90km, 4-6hrs. Shared snowmobile: €225 per person. One person per snowmobile: €300. Children / adults pulled in a snowmobile sleigh: €150. Price includes a snowmobile suit and boots upon prior request, a helmet and the snowmobile / snowmobile sleigh as appropriate.
Arctic Tundra with - possibly - a stop at the Struve Stone
Our longest snowmobile product, the Arctic Tundra Safari, runs out to a tiny wilderness cabin on the high treeless fells very close to the Norwegian border. It takes c. 5 hours and can be physically challenging. The route is either an out-and-back (if people are getting cold or the trails are hard) or a circular route via Nakkala.
Near the tundra, if the group has the time and competence, we can make a short detour to Enontekio's Struve Stone (Stuorrahanoaivi). It forms part of the World Heritage Struve Geodetic Arc - a chain of 34 triangulation stations running over 2,820km through 10 countries from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, established by the German-born Russian astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve between 1816 and 1855 to measure the exact size and shape of the earth.
Distance and approx. duration: 70-90km, 4-6hrs. Shared snowmobile: €250 per person. One person per snowmobile: €350. Children / adults pulled in a snowmobile sleigh: €150.
Galdotievo - Tundra Return by Snowmobile Sleigh
By skipping the long snowmobile sections to and from Hetta, this is the most direct and enjoyable way to reach the stunning tundra scenery, which is why we have often offered it to family and friends of all ages. A transfer from Hetta to Galdotievo can be arranged if needed; otherwise we gather in Galdotievo while guides drive the snowmobiles and sleighs up from Hetta, then head to the high point on the tundra.
Distance: 40km. Overall length: 3 hours. Shared snowmobile: €160 per adult. Adult/child pulled in a snowmobile sleigh: €80.
