Our short 'experiential' guide training packages are from 1 day to 1 week in length. These products are actually available year-round, apart from in our peak times in December and February, when we are simply too busy to fit in short-term training. Our '1 day in the life of a husky guide' products are particularly popular in Autumn; a very dog-intensive time on a husky farm.
- A full day mentored one-on-one by an experienced guide
- Especially popular in Autumn — a very dog-intensive season
- Agility, obedience and conditioning training with quad or sleighs
- Get to know a handful of dogs and a true insight into farm life
What the day involves
This product is designed for those who want a real connection with the dogs and a true understanding of life in the Arctic. Mentored by an experienced guide, you will get a behind-the-scenes insight into the rewards and challenges of life as a husky guide.
The day normally begins with giving morning soup to all the dogs and then pooping the farm, meeting and greeting the dogs along the way (though you are welcome to skip this part). Either way, you'll spend most of the day outside with the dogs, so be prepared for the elements and to be tired by the end.
Training and tasks
Most visitors spend the day on a combination of agility, obedience and conditioning training with the quad or sleighs. At this time of year we often train groups of dogs 12 to 20km per day. You're also welcome to join a wider range of farm tasks — guides may be building kennels, fixing cages, sorting lines or any of the many other jobs that are part of daily life here.
You will learn how to handle and train the dogs, socialise the pups, maintain a healthy environment for them, and feed 100+ adults and pups 2 to 3 times per day. Lunch is spent in the guide house, sharing stories and asking questions. If you are here in snow season, we'll of course make sure you get to mush!
