Spring Course in Lappish Bushcraft

Spring Course in Lappish Bushcraft

A 5-day spring taster of key winter survival skills with one of Finland's foremost instructors — fire-making, snowshoe navigation, ice-fishing and snow shelters.

Pasi is one of Finland's foremost survival instructors and an active member of 'Survival Guild Finland'. Whilst we have occasionally welcomed non-Finns onto the Survival Guild Courses, it is only in recent years that we have offered courses in English. This small taster course is designed to give an insight into a range of key outdoor survival skills.

  • Taught by Pasi, a Survival Guild Finland instructor
  • Fire-making the Finnish way
  • Snowshoe orienteering & snow shelters
  • Ice fishing & snowmobile driving

Fire & navigation

One of the most important winter survival skills is the ability to make a fire, both to keep warm and to boil water from snow. We spend time teaching the basics of how to prepare firesticks and kindling and laying fires the Finnish way.

Navigation through a fairly featureless, white landscape, often in 'white-out' conditions, is also an essential skill, so we will challenge you to complete a small orienteering course, on snowshoes, around the farm. Two checkpoints take you to pre-made forest / snow-shelters where we talk through the tools which Finns take with them into the wilderness.

Ice fishing & other modules

Ice fishing is one of the easiest ways of accessing natural food when the arctic is covered in snow, so this is something we spend some time practicing (and then, hopefully, preparing and eating the fish!). Other modules often covered include learning to drive a snowmobile, building snow shelters, and wilderness and cold safety and first aid.
