Lätäseno Wilderness Journey

Lätäseno Wilderness Journey

A multi-day expedition down one of the great wild rivers of the north, learning fishing, fire-making, navigation and shelter-building from the arctic tundra to the Barents Sea.

Built around the truly wild Lätäseno River, this journey takes you ever-deeper into the arctic tundra to learn survival skills hands-on — from fire-making and fishing to navigation, reindeer husbandry and sleeping out under the midnight sun.

  • Expedition down a great wild northern river
  • Fire-making, fishing, navigation & shelter-building
  • Reindeer husbandry with local herdsmen
  • From arctic tundra to the Barents Sea
  • Nights in wilderness cabins & self-made shelters

Day 1 – Into the Wild

After a morning sorting kit and introducing the area, you are transferred to the head of the wild Lätäseno River along an old road built by the Germans in World War 2 — so be ready for a bumpy ride! We sleep in a wilderness cabin near the roadhead and get our first insight into fire-making that evening. It is an amazingly relaxing place to simply enjoy nature — a world where Mother Nature still rules, golden eagles fly overhead and elk disappear over the horizon.

Days 2-3 – Surviving in the Arctic

We prepare fishing equipment the traditional way and use it to source ingredients for that evening's meal. This day's lesson on the art of building fires will be the first of many, and we work together on cleaning and cooking the fish and collecting wild herbs. Day 3 is a day of getting to grips with the fundamentals of navigation using both modern tools (compasses and GPS units) and natural signs and clues; some rapids en-route require earlier experience.

Days 4-6 – Peaks, Borders & Civilisation

We take the journey all the way to the Barents Sea on top of Norway, learning to read terrain maps and conquering picturesque mountain-bike tracks. We join local herdsmen to experience reindeer husbandry, find a perfect spot for the night and learn to make a shelter against rain, sun, wind and insects. As we reach our van waiting by the road, all looks familiar but the world is no longer the same place — it's the connection you made with nature, and the disconnection from civilisation.
