Travelling with a Dog

Travelling with a Dog

Practical guidance on the inoculations, paperwork and transport options for adopters bringing one of our dogs home, whether within Scandinavia or overseas.

It is pretty easy for anyone living in Scandinavia to adopt one of our dogs. If you are looking for a certain type of dog (one that can run with you, or one good with kids, etc), please get in touch. For dogs that aren't great working sled dogs, or are already on a reduced running plan from old age, we would rather they go to the ideal home than stay running here.

  • Adoption within Scandinavia is relatively straightforward
  • Overseas adoption is possible - dogs have travelled to Colorado, New York, the UK and Central Europe
  • Scandipet (Sweden) can fly dogs abroad via Amsterdam - a better option than routes through Finland
  • Guidance provided on Swedish rules and on bringing a dog into the USA
  • Includes a guide to measuring your dog for a travel box (A, B, C and D measurements)

Adopting from overseas

For those overseas, the inoculations and paperwork can be complicated, expensive and time-consuming, but it is not impossible: as you can read on the lucky dogs page, we have dogs who have moved as far as Colorado and New York, plus quite a few who travelled to the UK or Central Europe.

Scandipet from Sweden can arrange for dogs to be flown abroad via Amsterdam - a much better option than any company routing through Finland. Information is available on transferring through Sweden, on Swedish rules, and on the requirements for bringing a dog into the USA.

Measuring a dog for a travel box

When measuring a dog for a travel box: A = the length of the animal from nose to root of tail; B = the height from the ground to the elbow joint; C = the width across the shoulders; and D = the height of the animal in a standing or sitting position, depending on which is higher.
