Retired & older dogs
The following dogs are older or less useful sled-dogs but since they are probably not so easy to find new homes for, we are fully expecting to care for them into their old age: Kiri-Kiri, Bono, Vulpes, Kurpitsa, Cherry and Seljeli.
Kiri-Kiri is an awesome leader, though slowing down a little with age; no-one messes with him. He has hypothyroidism but is as strong and healthy as ever. Vulpes, though older now, is a great leader who stays focused and motivated and enjoys the shorter runs - super friendly with us and our guests even if a little grumpy with other dogs. Kurpitsa, whose name means 'pumpkin' in Finnish, is a sweetheart who will sit and gaze at you until you notice her, then paw at you for strokes.
Working sled dogs
The following are amazing sled-dogs but require more care and food than most to keep in good health or weight: Hickory, Japp, Dole, Buddha, Maple, Nuna, Cinnamon and Indigo.
Hickory is one of our H-pups born in 2014 on our farm; his whole litter are extremely hard workers and because of this he needs a lot of extra food to keep him healthy. Japp and Dole are among our strongest and fastest Alaskan huskies but, because of their short coats and energy use, have difficulty keeping weight on and need to be consistently fed more than the other sled-dogs. Indigo came as a very shy rescue dog who cowered in the corner of the kitchen, but after a lot of time and love has become a happy lady and a wonderful leader-in-training who wears a special fluffy harness to avoid harness rub.
