Adopt Me Please!

Adopt Me Please!

Meet the dogs currently looking for forever homes - oldies ready for a sofa, shy dogs needing patience, and special-needs dogs for experienced handlers.

For us, the most important part of an adoption is finding the right dog for the right person, but we very much hope people will first consider our oldies or those who would be put down on other farms for medical reasons. These dogs would make strong companion pets and, I believe, have a better life if they could retire to a sofa. Every dog we consider suitable for adoption has spent time indoors and is completely or nearly 100% house trained, and all are open and friendly towards people - though those in the 'special needs' section need experienced owners for various reasons.

  • Dogs listed in priority adoption order within three categories: Ready for a Sofa, Shy Dogs and Special Needs
  • All adoptable dogs have spent time indoors and are mostly or fully house trained
  • Oldies and medically-retired dogs are prioritised for adoption
  • An 'adoption-ready' app (via QR code) gives extra detail on each dog
  • Easy for Scandinavian adopters; overseas adoption is possible but involves paperwork and inoculations

Ready for a sofa

The dogs listed here have worked hard all of their lives and deserve a bit more constant pampering than we can give them in their retirement: Bono, Tengri, Grumpy, Trouble and Pinky.

Bono (born 1st August 2007) was one of the first litter to come to us. He was the quiet, 'no-nonsense' one of the four and by far the best sled dog. When he was about 3 we noticed one of his eyes clouding over and he was diagnosed with panus, an auto-immune response common in sled dogs, which we now keep at bay with daily drops. Otherwise he is super easy and a normal, healthy older male. Tengri (born 1st Nov 2008) is a total sweetheart and gentle old man who needs hypoallergenic food fed quite strictly or he gets cracks in the skin of his feet and sores around his eyes. He could quite easily become a couch potato at this time in his life - just please don't get his food wrong!

The three little sisters

Grumpy (born 1st December 2007) is a total sweetheart who desperately wants a sofa and 'her' person who will give her constant cuddles. She is happy with children or without, very sweet and a little needy for attention, and completely house trained. Trouble (born 1st December 2007) is the least needy of the three sisters; she will loyally bond to you once she knows that she is yours forever - the perfect mix of fun and quietness. Pinky (born 1st December 2007) still has the most energy and is the most full of life; she would benefit from a sensi-plus diet but is otherwise fine, and would settle down and focus all that energy on you in a forever home.

Shy dogs

We have a number of shy oldies that will probably spend the rest of their lives with us since they are not the dogs that people immediately fall in love with when they visit, but each has the potential to do well in the right home setting: Jani, Minnie & Mighty, Mullers, Pekki, Timon and Leon.

Jani (Dec 2007) has not run the past few seasons because of a chronic limp and is mostly frightened of men and new people, so is better off with women in a quiet, peaceful environment. Minnie & Mighty (Sept 2008) are timid rescue sisters who would ideally be adopted together so they can gain confidence from each other. Leon (July 2006) was for many years our #1 top runner, ran more than 21,000km in his life, and at 12 this gentle old man would make an awesome companion for someone able to offer him a soft sofa for his retirement.

Special needs dogs

These dogs would make great pets with the right people but would need experienced handlers for different reasons: Keri, Soda and Ronnie.

Keri (2006) would be suitable for an experienced handler only - he is extremely intelligent and obedient but behaves unpredictably and can snap if stressed, yet in the right home he could make a lovely companion. Soda (July 2014) is not aggressive but is huge and high-energy, born with a respiratory problem similar to asthma so we do not run him further than 4km; with the right handler he is an overly affectionate dog who wants nothing more than to please you. Ronnie is the son of a Pyrenean Mastiff and an Alaskan Husky, rescued from being put down; he adores cuddles, and an offer for him could effectively be a loving hospice home for his final months.

Practical aspects of adoption

It is pretty easy for anyone living in Scandinavia to adopt one of our dogs. If you are looking for a certain type of dog (one that can run with you, or one good with kids, etc), please get in touch - we would rather they go to the ideal home than stay running here.

For those overseas, the inoculations and paperwork can be complicated, expensive and time-consuming, but it is not impossible: as you can read on the lucky dogs page, we have dogs who have moved as far as Colorado and New York, plus quite a few who travelled to the UK or Central Europe.
