Our Farm and Cabins

Our Farm and Cabins

A tour of our farm at the western edge of Hetta - the main house, dog kitchen, kennels, kota area and wilderness cabins.

Our house is the last house to the west of Hetta village, so all the land to our west - with the backing of other owners and the Ministry of Forestry - is our immediate playground. The extension we built a few years back (pictured) serves as overflow space for guides, our dog medical area (note the shelves of medication in the background), and where we first welcome multiday safari clients. Around the main house are our workshop, dog kitchen, gear room and wood shed; the workshop is heavily used, year-round.

  • Set at the western edge of Hetta, with wilderness as the immediate playground
  • Farm sited c. 200m from the farmhouse and dog kitchen for safety, with a winter-lit walk
  • Unique GEE-HAW training area on the way to the farm
  • Dogs live on 360-degree chains among trees for shade in summer and roofs for spring sunbathing
  • Kota area with a fabric teepee, a wooden kota and welfare and environmental signboards

The Walk to the Farm

The farm sits c. 200m from the farmhouse and dog kitchen, so any occasional escapee won't run straight onto the main road. The walk between the two is lit in winter (the cable was dug in by hand) and full of wild flowers in summer.

One more thing to pass on the way to the farm: our fairly unique GEE-HAW training area (although the only video we have of it doesn't actually star a dog!).

Inside the Farm

At the farm, large gates with flaps on the bottom (to cope with changing snow levels) keep wild animals like reindeer, bear and wolves out and the dogs in. Just inside, trails lead off either side of the main through-road to the puppy areas.

In the main farm area, dogs live on chains with 360-degree motion. We have deliberately kept trees within the circles for shade in summer, and the flat kennel roofs let the dogs sunbathe in spring when the sun returns.

The Kota Area and Cabins

At the far end of the fenced farm is our kota area, with a fabric teepee, a wooden kota and numerous signboards about huskies in general, how we look after the dogs' health and welfare, how we have baselined our environmental impact, and the targets we work to.

We also have a variety of cabins, which we use on safaris and rent out through the year. More images of these to come soon.
