Wilderness and National Park Ski Trails Close to Hetta

Guided cross-country ski journeys from Hetta, from the classic 55 km Hetta-Pallas trail to a haunted-hut route to Näkkälä, with wilderness-hut overnights.

We can guide you on anything from a morning of skiing to a full-on wilderness ski journey. When overnights are involved in our cross country ski journeys we normally stay in a wilderness hut but we can also opt to camp if that is what is preferred.

The Classic 55 km Hetta-Pallas Ski Journey, Guided

One of the most popular routes starting in Enontekiö is the 55-km Hetta-Pallas Trail in the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, established in 1934. We're happy to arrange car transfers between the two ends (€65 per transfer) or, in Spring, to guide you on the journey itself.

The best skiing is c. mid-March to end-April, when the trails are well maintained, though you can also ski earlier and later on back-country skis in case the tracks aren't yet in place. The trail runs either way, starting and ending in Hetta Village or Pallastunturi Visitor Centre (or beyond, e.g. Olos or Ylläs).

Travelling south from Hetta, the first open huts are at Pyhäkero. The next major stops are Sioskuru, Hannukuru and Nammalakuru, all with both open and bookable huts. Wilderness cafes open periodically at Pyhäkero and c. 10 km from Pallas, and both Hetta and Pallas have nature centres with exhibits and films on the area.

Näkkälä to Hetta via the Haunted Hut

When our guides are ready for their first overnight ski journey, we recommend either a round-trip from Hetta to the Sioskuru Huts or a one-way journey to or from Näkkälä, sleeping in the 'haunted hut' en route.

Leaving Hetta when the tracks are functional, follow the illuminated trail and branch off just before the first big uphill at the signpost to Pahtajärvi / Näkkälä (follow the one with the skier symbol). You are very close to the first hut, the bookable Sisanki cabin, and the snowmobile trail towards Näkkälä lies just a few metres away. The open sleeping hut we recommend is c. 15 km from Hetta and is reputedly the most haunted hut in Finland!
