Connecting to us through Finland is generally the easiest option if you are relying on public transport, since there are easy train and bus connections to Enontekiö from most regional airports. Kittilä is a short 2-hour shuttle and Rovaniemi is three hours but with a very easy bus connection – the bus stops pretty much right outside our door.
- Easiest route for public transport; Rovaniemi bus stops right outside our door
- Closest larger airports: Kittilä (2-hour shuttle) and Rovaniemi (3 hours)
- Kittilä airport ↔ Enontekiö bus c. €30 per person each way
- Subsidised mini-bus taxi from Kittilä airport €35 per person (Thu/Sat/Sun evenings)
- Hetta Huskies group transfer €120 / direction; private taxi c. €250 / direction
By Air
Flights from Helsinki connect north via Finnair (to Kittilä or Rovaniemi), SAS / Blue1 (to Rovaniemi or Kittilä) or Norwegian.no (to Rovaniemi). The closest larger commercial airport is Kittilä, with Rovaniemi slightly further away; onward land connections from both are easy, year-round.
In December, charter flights reach Enontekiö almost daily (for instance with Thomson, Canterbury-Travel or Transun) – for December day-trips to Lapland we definitely recommend Canterbury-Travel. Through the ski season, charter companies (Jet2, Flybe, Thomas Cook Airlines, Ski-flights.com, Thomson Airways) fly to Kittilä, and Lufthansa flies into Kittilä from Munich and Frankfurt.
By Bus / Subsidised Shuttle / Taxi
If you fly directly into Enontekiö there will be private taxis waiting outside to offer the 4km shuttle to Hetta, and we include pick-ups with our 5-day tours. Arriving from Kittilä or Rovaniemi in the South, the Rovaniemi bus (Matkahuolto) travels north twice daily to Hetta, picking up en route at Kittilä, Kittilä airport, Levi, Muonio and Palojoensu.
For the last few years it has cost c. €30 per person each way between Kittilä airport and Enontekiö. Subsidised mini-bus taxis between Kittilä Airport and Hetta run on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for €35 per person (pre-booked with Elli-Marja Kultima of Kilpisjärven Taksi). Hetta Huskies offers in-house group transfers between KTT airport and Hetta at €120 per direction when we have capacity. A private taxi shuttle between Hetta and Kittilä costs c. €250 per direction.
By Train
Finland's rail company 'VR' is another option for continuing north from Helsinki or Tampere. The trains are very modern, many with computer cars, allergenic cars and 2- or 3-person sleeping carriages with showers. From the trainheads at Kolari or Rovaniemi you connect through to Hetta with Matkahuolto, Finland's national bus company.
By Car
If you are driving, be aware that the road sign network within the municipality of Enontekiö can be confusing, since in Finland signs point towards the county town of each municipality by stating the name of the municipality rather than the town – i.e. the turn towards Hetta at Palojoenso actually points towards Enontekiö. If you plan to drive here in winter in your own car, you will need winter tyres (studs are not accepted) and we recommend an integrated pre-heating system, as most locals warm the oil in their cars for a couple of hours before use.
