Popular Hetta Bike Trails

Popular Hetta Bike Trails

Longer day-trip biking trails around Hetta — from the easy illuminated 10km loop to the historic 26km old postal route to Nakkala.

There are a number of longer trails in Hetta which make great day trips. Some involve transfers to or from trailheads (or both); eg the Nakkala trail and the Leppajarvi-Kultima trail. The Jyypravaara, Pahtajarvi and Perila trails can be biked to and from the farm.

  • Pahtajarvi loop: 2–3 hours including a lunch break around an open fire in a wilderness kota
  • Pahtajarvi price: Adults €95, Children €55, Families €250 (up to 2 adults)
  • All guided trails include bike, helmet and guide
  • The illuminated 10km loop is an easy trail with good scenery — you can't get lost
  • Historic 26km old postal route, marked with white-red crosses on green poles

Jyypravaara Cross Country Trail Network

A good summer route. In winter parts are well groomed, but others mean pushing through ungroomed sections. Numerous trails criss-cross the Jyypravaara hills and ski-tracks, so it is easy to find fun routes to suit your fitness, and our favourite circular route is a bit of a local Hetta secret. The 3km Peuranpolku trail leads from the Visitor Center to the sports field and then the school, while the 13km Jyppyra-Laittavarri SE trail requires a wade across the Nakkalajoki.

Pahtajarvi 18km Cross Country Trail

A good summer route, not recommended in winter, and one of our favourite loops. Marked with blue signs, it follows a skyline trail north of Hetta and returns beside a spectacular gorge. The most rugged landscape is at Lake Pahtajarvi, set in a canyon, where the trail runs along the upper slopes on its east side. Beautiful wetlands along the way grow an abundance of Globe Flowers and Wood Crane's-bills. There are duckboards, but you will still need waterproof hiking boots.

Services: the Sissanki hut, between Sissanginselka and Paljasselka, is normally locked but can be rented for overnight stays; the Narpisto lean-to shelter is at the trail's halfway point.

Perila / Ullatieva Trail

A good summer route, and possible in winter for the adventurous. A guide favourite is this beautiful ridge trail c. 4km from the far end of Hetta. The 20km route is seldom discovered by visitors. The ridge trails crisscross many times, giving multiple scenic vantage points, and you needn't fear getting lost since all paths reconverge. On the northern side the trail follows a river with the Jyypravaara Fells rising behind; to the south, across a lake, lie the stunning fells of the National Park. It is normally offered as a 2-hour summer product or a half-day hike out to the far end of the ridge.

The Old Postal Route between Nakkala and Hetta (26 km)

The 26km Hetta-Nakkala Trail is marked with tall green poles topped by a white-red cross. It is historic, forming part of an old postal route between Hetta, Nakkala, Poyrisjarvi and Kalkujarvi, and is more varied than 'old postal route' might suggest. Some sections are too rocky and technical for most riders, and a few cross large bogs, sometimes with rideable boardwalks and sometimes without, so be prepared for wet feet. It is easier biked from Hetta to Nakkala. The open wilderness hut Nakkalan Valitupa lies c. 14km from Hetta.

Leppajarvi – Kultima (24km) and overnight loops

The moderate 24km Leppajarvi-Kultima trail is a nice day route along an old semi-marked path through mostly lichen-filled dry birch forest. A few damp sections lack maintained duckboards, so expect wet feet. There is also a 28km Palojoki-Suonttajarvi-Muotkajarvi loop, and the option of a longer, more technical journey to the remote wilderness cabin at Salvasjarvi, which crosses back and forth over the Norwegian border, so technically you should carry your passport.

Spring Fat-Biking in Enontekio

There are a few weeks each year in Spring when not only the trails but all of the surrounding snow solidify. This is an unbelievable time for wilderness fatbiking, and routes described in our wilderness biking sections become possible as well as the routes closer to Hetta itself.
