Winter Adventure Morning
This morning combines snowshoeing with time among the dogs. We kit you out in snowshoes for a beautiful 1.5km hike through nature to the dog farm, where you can leave the snowshoes behind to meet the dogs, play with the pups and try our puppy agility course. Over a hot juice and snack break in a traditional kota (teepee) we teach you to make a fire the Finnish way.
You then help prepare a team and head out onto the marsh to run our six-kilometre loop with your own dogs, or play with a sleigh / quad on our GEE HAW training tracks. Back at the farm, you help return the dogs to their kennels, learning more about them along the way. Duration: c. 10am – 1.30pm. Price: Adult €135, children €90. Primarily offered in spring when tracks and snow conditions are good.
Winter Adventure Day
In a winter adventure day you get to try a combination of snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing, mushing and snowmobiling, and we may have time to give you a skijoring demonstration. You will also be able to join the guides for the evening feed. This product is more about an introduction to a variety of winter sports than a focus on the work we do with the dogs.
The morning snowshoe walk heads far out onto the marshes on a hidden ridge close to our land, then back across country until we hit one of our mushing tracks. We then head straight out with the teams to experience one of the longer day-length safari routes before lunch at a lakeside cabin on the far shores of Lake Ounasjärvi. After lunch we return to the farm, put the dogs away, and — if you have energy to spare — try out cross country skiing or even skijoring. Duration: c. 10am – 5pm. Price: Adults €195, children €150.
Saami Cultural Package
One of three packages we primarily offer multiday safari clients on their free days (these days exclude husky mushing, since multiday clients generally want to try something new). The cultural package includes a 3-hour reindeer farm visit, an hour with the dogs of your choice back at our farm, an accompanied visit to the local Saami nature centre, and an evening at a private sauna cabin where you are challenged to try the ancient ritual of ice-hole swimming. An outing to Juhl's Silver Gallery in the Norwegian Saami village of Kautokeino may be possible for an additional fee.
Price: Adults €120, children €85. Minimum participants: 4. Includes booking of the individual activities and transfers to and from the reindeer farm, Nature Centre and ice-hole experience location.
Arctic Sports Package for Multiday Clients
The second of three packages for multiday safari clients on their free days. This arctic sports day includes a 20km snowmobile ride (small children sit in a sleigh if their legs cannot reach the foot-rest), a 1-hour snowshoe tour, and an option to try XC skiing, the fat-bikes or our fat-maxes. You can relieve tired muscles at the end of the day by relaxing between a private sauna and ice hole. Price: Adults €195, children €150. Minimum participants: 4.
Farm Doggy Day (Post Multiday Tour)
The third package, for clients who have already spent a number of days around the dogs and farm. It covers a hotel-farm transfer from a local hotel and lunch, and you are welcome to join us for as much of our working day as you wish — cuddling, brushing, adding bedding to kennels, walking oldies, puppy playtime, and possibly nail cutting, dog weighing, medical checks or basic training. Price: €30. Minimum participants: 1. Includes transfers to and from your hotel and lunch at the farm.
Other Adventure Suggestions for Free Days in Hetta
Why not have your own mini adventure whilst in Hetta? All of Hetta's many ski tracks are described in the location section of our website. Our top tip for early-winter beginners is the illuminated track from the nature centre; in spring, head across the lake to the Pyhäkero cabin for a hot chocolate (on skis, or on snowshoes following the snowmobile trail), or up the radar station road for high trails with panoramic views. Fat biking comes into its own on hard spring trails, and E-fat bikes open up routes to Sioskuru or around the Phatajarvi bike trail. For something more sedentary, visit the nature centre and lunch at Cafe Peura, with the short 10-min hike up Jyppyrä hill behind it. We can organise group ice-hole swimming for €20pp.
