They breed two breeds of trotters: Finnish Horses and American WB Horses. Miina will no doubt be happy to answer questions about many parts of life in the north when you visit - not least about herding reindeer and keeping horses warm in winter!

  • Lappish lunch of reindeer sausage, bread and salad around an open fire

Life in Enontekio

During your tour you will learn how people live and have lived in Enontekio, and how this ancient lifestyle has changed dramatically with the machines of the 21st century. You will learn about the reindeer's life-cycle, what they eat in winter, why they now need supplemental fodder in the coldest months, what that fodder is, and how it is transported to them as they roam freely.

Learn, too, how herders know which reindeer are theirs, and how families still work together at the ear-marking season or at gatherings and separations where reindeer are sorted for culling or deworming. You may be surprised by what you hear - that the Sami once insulated their shoes with grass but now use newspaper, or why the dreaded summer mosquito is actually much appreciated by the herders.

Feeding the reindeer and the lasso

A highlight of the tour is having the chance to feed some of the reindeer and to meet the baby ones in the corral. Everyone is also given the opportunity to see a lasso demonstration and to try throwing it for themselves.

Lunch in the Kota

In the Kota (a Lappish cottage), hot drinks and a tasty lunch of reindeer sausage, Lappish bread and salad are served whilst seated around an open fire. There will also be an opportunity to taste dried reindeer meat (a vegetarian option is available upon prior request) whilst we chat more about Sami culture and the history of reindeer husbandry. Reindeer skins, antlers and reindeer meat are also for sale.
