Mid-Length Safaris

Half-day husky safaris of around 2-4 hours — the 12km Frozen Lakes and 20km Magic of Winter tours.

These safaris last c. 2 – 4 hours — up to half a day. If you have booked ahead, your team will be ready and we run the farm visit at the end. If not, it is no problem so long as we have staff and dogs available: we will get you involved in harnessing a team or, if you have children, show you around the farm first while other staff prepare your team.

Frozen Lakes

This safari journeys across marshes, rivers and forest glades and also over the area's largest lake, Ounasjarvi, whose ice cover is >1m thick each winter — so crossing to its southern shores there is no danger of falling in!

With small groups on warm days we stop on the far side in a local 'Mokki' — the traditional lakeside holiday home most Finns aspire to own — for stories, drinks and a traditional 'forest bun' before returning to the farm by dog sleigh. With larger groups or on particularly cold days, we instead return to the farm, put the dogs away and enjoy stories in our traditional but underfloor-heated farm kota.

'Magic Of Winter' Safari

This c. 20km safari is one the guides most enjoy driving for its variety. At times you whip along tight tracks full of ups, downs and corners; at others you traverse marshes, forest glades and frozen rivers. About half way you cross the area's largest lake, Lake Ounasjarvi (ice cover >1m thick each winter).

We break in a local 'Mokki' for a taste of the traditional lakeside holiday-home life of the Finns. Enjoy drinks and Finnish squeaky cheese & cloudberry jam or forest cakes before returning to the farm by dog sleigh. If you wish, we can show you how to look after your team during the breaks, and back at the farm you are normally welcome to help tuck your dogs into their own kennels before saying goodbye.
