Half-to Full-Day Husky Safaris

Half-to Full-Day Husky Safaris

Longer one-day husky safaris from 20km to 40km, including the favourite 'Magic of Winter' and 'Call of the Wild' tours.

We offer several longer 1-day safaris from mid-December / January onwards (subject to snow), including our favourite 20km 'Magic of Winter' and 30km 'Call of the Wild'. The 40km Winter Wonderland journeys further from base, so for this, our 20km kota safari and our unique Reindeer Fondue safari you will need to check availability ahead of time, as it takes us time to open the less-used tracks and prepare food. Some safaris are open only to groups.

  • Magic of Winter 20km — c. 3.5 hrs, c. 2.5 hrs mushing
  • Call of the Wild 30km — c. 5 hrs, 3.5–4 hrs mushing
  • Winter Wonderland 40km — c. 6.5 hrs, c. 5 hrs mushing (solo sleighs only)
  • Cross the area's largest lake, Ounasjarvi, with >1m of ice
  • Breaks in a lakeside 'Mokki' cabin with squeaky cheese, cloudberry jam and forest cakes

'Magic Of Winter' Safari

This c. 20km safari is one the guides most enjoy driving for its variety. At times you whip along tight tracks full of ups, downs and corners; at others you traverse marshes, forest glades and frozen rivers. About half way you cross the area's largest lake, Ounasjarvi (ice cover >1m thick each winter, so no danger of falling in), reaching its southern shores where you can marvel at the Arctic landscape and the life of those who have lived here for eons.

We break in a local 'Mokki' for a taste of the traditional lakeside holiday-home life of the Finns. Enjoy drinks and Finnish squeaky cheese & cloudberry jam (on days cold enough for us to pre-warm the cabin with an open fire) or forest cakes (on warmer days) before returning to the farm by dog sleigh.

Programme Duration: c. 3.5 hours. Price: Adults sharing a sleigh €205 pp, Children (age 3–12) €135, Solo or guide-driven sleigh €350. Includes a farm visit, hot drinks, a snack and c. 20km safari.

Call of the Wild Safari

This fun 30km safari combines the best trails of our adventurous 20km safari with some of the beautiful, tranquil end trails of our 40km safari — the best of both worlds in one half-day product.

For a small group this is the longest day-safari we generally offer, since our 30km trails are all part of the standard route network whereas the 40km tracks take great effort to open unless already opened for another group. Depending on temperature and conditions, we may stop more than once in a wilderness cabin for warm drinks, local snacks (squeaky cheese and forest cakes) and sandwiches.

Programme Duration: c. 5 hours. Price: Adults shared sleigh €305, Solo sleigh €375, Children (age 3–12) €175. Includes a farm visit, driving instructions, c. 30km safari and a sandwich lunch with local snacks and hot drinks in a wilderness cabin.

Winter Wonderland Experience

This 40km safari covers one of the longest day-routes possible in the far North — gliding between frozen marshes, lakes and forest glens on one of the most ancient forms of Arctic transport known to man.

On arrival, the sound of excited dogs guides you down a snowy forest track to the farm. You will learn a little about how the dogs live, greet some of the non-running adults and pups, and meet your own team of 4–8 dogs (depending on snow conditions) before receiving detailed driving instructions. We offer this only as a solo sleigh, since the distance is too great for the dogs to pull two people in one sleigh.

Your guide will tell you when you reach Lake Ounasjarvi, whose ice cover is >1m thick once frozen. On its far side, nestled amongst the fells of Ounastunturi on the edge of Finland's most beautiful national park, a small Finnish 'Mokki' awaits for lunch. Back at the farm, we will gladly teach you how to put your dog team 'to bed'.

Programme Duration: c. 6.5 hours inc. farm transfers. Price: Solo sleighs / sleighs with a child €350, Child €280. Includes a guided farm visit, wilderness lunch and a 40km safari. NB: If a 40km safari is not already scheduled on the day, we will run this for a minimum of 6 people.
